The 50's!
For our project we had to make a museum curation on a decade from the 1910 would0. As a group of three, Tim, Josh and I decided on the 50’s.
The first thing we did was basic research of the 50’s. Like what happened, who was around, that sort of thing.
After that, we all thought that it would be a good idea as to make a Diner as the house style to our ‘room’ within the museum.

We then assigned tasks to each other within the group; my ‘main’ contribution to the project was the Posters that are in the scene and then there was the creation of a couple of models within the scene.
Before I could start the posters I had to research different topics that would be relevant and informative of the 50’s.
Posters
Before I could start the posters I had to research different topics that would be relevant and informative of the 50’s.
Posters
So I surfed the internet looking for material that I could include onto my posters. The first thing I found caught my eye would be that of the subject of the ‘teenager’ in the 50’s. This is because I don’t think a lot of people would know that ‘teenagers’ was not a term used for young adults, there used to be just a line draw between adult and child.
This poster was created in a programme similar to that of Photoshop and its called Paint tool SAI, I used this to draw and colour in the girl and car that is in the image. I then opened this file and imposed text onto it, giving information as to why the term ‘teenager occurred’.
I then created the ‘Elvis’ Poster, this is because he was very iconic to the 50’s and was a big influence within the music industry. For this one, I got an image of Elvis and went over it in the SAI software so that I would have a more personalised look about it, I then shaded in grey scale, and made it so that not all the lowlights where completely blended so that I looked more stylised and interesting.
Then I added information about him in the corner so that there was a bit more substance to the poster.
The last poster that I created was about the 50’s after WW2. I got an image of some women dressed in 50’s style clothes and imposed lace to two corners of the image. Then I faded out the image of the woman quite a bit, because there was a lot of information to go on this poster. I then added the information to the image, and to make sure that it could be seen more clearly, I made the lettering bold.
After creating those posters I was designated to creating some iconic 50’s furniture for diners.
To do this I would first look at images on the internet to see what was on there so that I would get the general idea of what it is that I would be modelling in Maya.
These are the models that I created -
Glass and straw:
This is a Sunday glass that I made for the diner, this was created in Maya using a number of different tasks, I also learnt how to create a glass texture.
Cash register:
This model is not all that practical due to all the polygons that have gone into creating it, however, because this is just going to be one scene there no problem in really having that many polygons, so if I was to try and recreate this again, i would do it with less polygons to try and bring that count down.
Benches:
Benches:
This was made in three different parts to keep the poly count down, for this I used the hyper shade tool to make it clear as to what the sections where going to be what colour when the UV's were going to be done on the model. This is a model that i did not texture.
Guitar:
This is another model that has a really high poly count, and as you can see from the image above, it shows that there has only been material applied, however the finished product was textured by me, in Photoshop. This has also been done on a rather large scale, so it when it was imported into the diner scene, it was huge compared to it, so next time, if i was to create it again, I would work on a smaller scale.
Knife:
Knife:
This is a model of a knife that I created and I do not like the model at all. The design just looks juvenile compared to the rest of the models that I have made.
Fork:
Fork:
This is a fork model that I made. This was made using the 'bend tool' making it look a little more realistic, however this still looks a little to angular to look 'correct'.
Sauces:
These are mustard and ketchup bottles that I modeled. These sauces have an updated version were the bottles are not so pointed at the top, making them look a little less lethal.
Clock:
This is the finished clock for the diner, the only thing that has been changed for this model would be that of the colour around the clock, that has been changed to red, making it more retro.
Evaluation of the presentation
I feel as though the presentation was not as long as I would of liked it to be. This is mainly down to not talking in enough detail about different parts of the presentation. We also did not plan out the organisation of who was going to talk when.

There was a point where Tim stubbled within his talking and slightly froze, so Josh the other person in our group took over on that part for him, to make it easier on his teammate.
Then however, due to being in the 'zone' Josh carried on to the end of the presentaion with the information. This is also partly due to me not wanting to interupt him.
This is where the lack of detail came in, becasue we didnt talk about the parts that we researched. I only talked about the first poster that was looked at, and then I was silent for the rest of the presentaion.
Also a thing that was not covered in the presentaion was the actual texturing and modelling on the Diner, this would of made our presentaionhae more substance if we went into more detail about the creation of the model.
