MoodBoards for Horror.

Slasher Horror

Scream

Halloween

Freddy Vs Jason

This type of horror is usually focused upon the suspense factor of what is going to happen next. Also, a lot of slasher horror flicks make it so that you question the storyline, an example of this would be 'Psycho' This is a film where you think that someone else is the murderer and it is not until the person, originally perceived to be the murderer is killed that people see that it was in fact the son killing people rather than the Mother.

As seen in these movies, atmosphere is everything to the environment and sometimes this is what makes a certain scene scary, if that is the theme that the creator is going for.

This makes me think that the sound to the game level that I shall be making should have sound incorporated into it.

Where the main horror aspect would take place is where I am going to make the sounds within my level higher.

This should make the player feel suspense, this is because I should be able to build up suspense with the sounds.

Splatter Horror

Death Proof

Braindead

Passion Of Christ

SAW???

This is the type of horror that is all about the blood, gore and mayhem. They use the gore as an added shock, this is also used to repulse the person that is playing the game.
When people usually play horror games, or watch films, they usually do it so that they can feel the fright within the game.

Making the game both interesting and gory would be hard. Especially when the only bit that I shall be creating is the environment.
This is a good effect but only if it fits the purpose, there are too many films and games out there that over use blood and gore and sometimes this can ruin the entire effect someone was going for when they initially went to create the film.

This is one type of horror that I am going to avoid when creating my game level. This is because I want to go with a more subtle effect, than splatter horror would probably allow.
Supernatural Horror

Sinister

The Conjuring

The Conjuring

Paranormal Activity 4
This is playing on the fear of the unknown, this is a largely used base for most horror games and films. Supernatural entities are easy to get wrong - this could end up a laughing stock, if not done properly. 'Paranormal Activity', this is a film that has been worn and stretched, this is a film that no longer, has much of a fear factor anymore, this is because the film has been put into 4 (so far) and each time, the storyline is even more boring and the supernatural happenings within the film are pretty much the same.

A film like 'Sinister' however, it is clear to see that the storyline is well thought out and it has a good back story as to why such things happen. This is a change and also the content of the film is different from what I normally see when watching horror movies.
'Sinister' plays around with juxtaposition a lot, like the 'home movies' that are seen, at the start, there is a lovely moment of family all together and then it cuts to the family's murder. They are all done in different ways and in different settings.

I like the way that Supernatural Horror can progress, I, when creating my game, would like to try and incorporate some of this into my level.

I want there to be a clear division when the player is in the main horror aspect of the environment and when they are just wondering around the house.

Exploitation Horror

Burlesque Massacre

Anna Scream Queen Killer
This is horror that mainly includes sexual profanity, this is where the 'exploitation' comes into it.
This is a very male dominated genre, it has both naked women and also violence.
In these films, women, from the pictures above can be seen to be in a position of power. Showing their dominance.

This is very pleasing to some men and women, this can be just taken in the way that it is a woman in charge and doing what she wants (killing) or it could be taken sexually and make people watch it to get some gratification.

This is not something that I could put into my level, unless I was creating a character.
This would be hard to incorporate into a level, however you could do this by making a scene where a woman is obviously the main person of power.

CHOSEN:

Looking through these I can tell that I am leaning more towards the Slasher/Supernatural side of horror.
This is because I like the types of environments that are created for these horrors. They have a lot more to do with atmosphere and also environment rather than the character play, although that is equally important.

TOY MOOD BOARD

Here are a number of different images that helped inspire some of the assets within my level.

These helped me make the area 'toy world' within my level and some other places within the scene as well.
Making a level for pediophobia was hard in the case of what was to go into the level. Making dolls fit into a scene naturally is hard. So I thought to make a rather obvious toy collection, but with a hint at dolls.

As you can see from the images on this blog page, the images are all secondary sources, this is because they they allow for the wide range that I wanted in the mood board.
Primary images are harder for me to get a hold of, in such a large variety, that is because I do not have the products to take images of and shops are not too fond of people coming into them and then taking pictures of their merchandise.
The internet allowed me to gather a number of different images, so that I could compile them and see what ones i wanted to use in my level.
